We wanted to bring you, the parents, some video game options that are mainstream and suitable for young children and on up. This is not an exhaustive list, but a popular one. These are the games your kids will be talking about in school or daycare with their friends, these are the games they will want to watch on YouTube and Twitch.tv.

Best Video Games for children 5-8+ years old:

This game is available on Nintendo Switch and rated E for everyone. Kids have loved it for decades. The original game was published by the company Gameboy in 1993. The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening is a  simple game that children as young as five can enjoy, although 7+ would be preferable.  There are many dungeons to explore and fun items to unlock. It is a perfect introduction to gaming.

For the younger audience, about five to eight years old, this is an awesome game. The PAW Patrol game includes sixteen adventurous rescue missions that the kids get to help. Each of the characters has unique abilities that aid in keeping the community safe. This philosophy is reflective of the life lesson, we are stronger together when everyone uses their unique gifts.

This game is rated E for everyone. It is great for younger kids. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is soothing, with beautiful forests and natural backdrops. It incorporates storytelling with a soothing soundtrack. The user interacts with various characters to unlock mysteries of fate.

Everyone knows of Pokemon. In Sword and Shield, the player controls a trainer who is on a mission to catch the Pokemon, and to do so, they battle other trainers along the way. You begin with a starter, choosing between a grass, water, or fire-type Pokemon. Each one has a personality and characteristics to benefit the player along their journey.

Animal Crossing takes place on a utopian island. The user plays a person living in a village. The day cycles from day to night, and the island is home to various animals, insects, and wildlife. The main achievement of the game is to upgrade your house to the maximum extent and pay off any debt. The island customization and setting make the game especially popular.

One of the most popular games on the market is Fortnight. It is a survival game that is fast-paced and full of action. There’s a lot of forethought and strategy needed to defeat the other 99 players and come out on top. It helps teens learn to problem solve and think about their next moves ahead of time at a fast rate of thinking and requires a lot of teamwork if you’re dropping in with a team.

  1.   Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales  

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the newest Spider-man game rated 13+. The player acts as Miles Morales, who mentored under the original Spider-man. The gamer gets to be a superhero fighting off evil and pursuing justice for the community.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-packed adventure game. It takes place in the kingdom of Hyrule. Players can run, swim, glide, and climb to achieve their mission. The game is about a boy named Link, and the player acts as this character. He is on a path to save a princess and has some roots in mythology. It is a fun game for exploring and challenging oneself.
